High Blood Pressure Foundation 15th Annual Report 2005

High Blood Pressure Foundation Director's Report 2005

Another New Year and another Annual Report!  We are grateful to our funders, both charitable trusts and the corporate sector, Foundation Friends, and many individuals for their support during 2005 and trust that this will continue. We acknowledge the help of George Stewart (Printers) regarding production of this report.

We are grateful to those who, instead of receiving gifts for as special landmark Birthdays or wedding anniversaries, decided to ask for donations to this charity. In addition we thank those who have decided to remember the Foundation in their wills.  We are also grateful to Foundation Friends who organise some events for us. All donations, whether large or small, are most welcome and enable us to continue our work in improving the basic understanding, assessment, treatment and public awareness of high blood pressure.

We are very pleased that our High Blood Pressure Foundation Nurse continues to spread the word about high blood pressure both in her work at the hospital and in the many general practice surgeries she visits. We are immensely grateful to the Charles Wolfson Trust for supporting her post this year.

You will have read the research and educational reports and we are currently planning another High Blood Pressure Foundation Symposium on 16th March 2006.

Our many awareness-raising health educational events have been well attended which serves to reinforce the need to continue these  - be they in supermarkets, city chambers, an airport, fitness clubs or railway stations. Fund-raising events this year have included a most inspiring talk over lunch by the mountaineer, Jamie Andrew, which was very well attended, a Christmas carol concert by Dalkeith and Monktonhall Brass Band, and a dinner at the George Hotel. Thanks to the many people who chose the Foundation to benefit from their participation in the Marathon and the Great Scottish Walk

Sometimes it is frustrating that despite our best efforts there are still many people who are totally unaware of the dangers of untreated high blood pressure and the risk factors associated with the condition, namely heart attack and stroke.  On the other hand it is always gratifying to learn about people have been helped by attending the health educational events mentioned in this report.  Obviously much more can be done to expand our work, but this depends to a large extent on donations to the Foundation.

Once again many thanks to Foundation Friends, our funders, the Trustees and Treasurer for support during 2005.  In particular my sincere thanks to Fiona Bell, the Foundation’s secretary, for all her hard work and efficiency.

Please continue to donate to the High Blood Pressure Foundation, and, to those of you reading this report for the first time, we hope that we may count upon your support this year.   Have a happy and healthy 2006!
