The theme for World Hypertension Day (WHD) 2009 is "Salt and High Blood Pressure: Two Silent Killers."
The Day aims to highlight that: High blood pressure is the biggest single cause of death worldwide through strokes, heart attacks and kidney diseases. Salt is the major factor putting up blood pressure. Reducing salt intake reduces blood pressure across the population. If salt intake was reduced by half it would save approximately 2.5 million people a year dying unnecessarily of strokes, heart attacks and chronic kidney diseases worldwide. http://www.worldhypertensionleague.org/

This year's event was held in glorious sunshine at Bruntsfield Links Golf Club on the 11 September 2008. The event was kindly sponsored by Balfour & Manson. Clifford Hastings ensured that the shotguntournament went without a hitch. We are also indebted to our after dinnerspeaker, Bill Copeland, for sharing his expertise and wit. The High Blood Pressure Foundation would like to thank all the companies and individuals who supported us on the day, either through playing or donating a prize, raising a fantastic £9,000 for the charity.
An informal Fashion Event was held in Hobbs on 20 November 07. Musical entertainment was provided by Vanessa, Gordon and James a talented trio who treated us to a jazz recital prior to a fashion show with style advice from image consultant Lorna Hudson. A number of our supporters enhanced their winter wardrobes and there was much amusement as friends got together to give each other advice on what not to wear! A total of £752.61 was raised for the Foundation.
The Achievement of Blood Pressure Targets in Primary Care: What are the Drivers for Success?
6 November 07
In the autumn we maintained our annual event of delivering a high blood pressure symposium. On this occasion we examined the specific aspect of achieving blood pressure targets. Richard Williams, one of our fellow trustees and an Edinburgh General Practitioner chaired the symposium, which had Professor Gordon McInnes, President of the British Hypertension Society arguing the strong evidence base for achieving targets. His talk was followed by one from Dr Dean Marshall, an Edinburgh GP and a powerful force in Scottish medical politics, in which he argued that it was incentives offered to general practitioners that resulted in blood pressure targets being reached. He emphasised the success of primary care in delivering targets for BP control that would result in an improvement of cardiovascular heath. The discussion generated by these two talks shows that there remains a healthy debate around the best methodologies for achieving blood pressure control and thus the reduction of heart attacks and strokes that we all wish to see within the Scottish population!
